hiriZAIN is a web-based tool developed within the framework of Udalsarea 2030, the Basque Network of Sustainable Municipalities, to support local authorities in integrating health and climate action into urban planning.

Originally developed in 2014 in collaboration with the Basque Government’s Department of Health, the tool has been updated through the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project with the participation of BC3 and Ihobe, the Basque Government’s Public Environmental Management Agency. This latest update strengthens the climate perspective and highlights the impact of climate change on citizens’ quality of life.

What is hiriZAIN?

hiriZAIN is a practical web application that enables the analysis of urban plans and projects by considering health as a state of physical, mental and social well-being that allows people to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

To achieve this, hiriZAIN examines each urban initiative through 10 key health determinants, helping to identify:

• Key aspects affected by the initiative
• Opportunities for improvement
• Potential health impacts of the initiative

Its objective is to facilitate the systematic integration of this perspective into urban planning processes.

Health, Climate Change and Urban Planning
